Finally read this huge blindspot in my reading of the fiction of HP Lovecraft, has a lot of the issues they comes with the territory of reading an story by Lovecraft but also has some of the most effective small town/regional/coastal horror ever written! The chase sequence in chapter 4 of this is a shockingly great bit of action writing from Lovecraft that had me on edge!

I am very glad to have read this little gem of a horror novella and am equally glad to see that it really lives up to its reputation in Lovecraft's canon!

First read this as a teenager. Recently proof listened to it again for Librivox. The story stands up to the test of time, though a few aspects are a bit dated.
