Short, spooky and utterly weird. My first Lovecraft and definitely not the last.

A must read for cosmic horror or Lovecraft fans, one of his greatest and most influential tales.

I reread this every year H.P. Lovecraft is dark and scary. Cosmic Horror to start the new year!

The end oh the end.
The ideas that unravel right at the end.
Chapters 1-3 should be compressed and points in chapter 5 as the start of the story chapter 4 is where all the action happens.
Over all it was interesting and frightening but it just should just be re arranged.
It’s an author I wanted to try because some well known card games are based on his world building.

Bien

I mostly read this because it was one of the foundational influences for Ruthanna Emrys' Winter Tide. Read with that outlook, it was quite enjoyable. I suspect I would not have enjoyed it nearly as much without that as a background.

It's better written than Lovecraft's earliest work (which is most of what I've read), less prone to word salad. Lovecraft's utter horror at anyone "different" comes through loud and clear here. The people of Innsmouth are variously described as fishlike, froglike, and apelike. Some of it is just comical: ZOMG! The priest wears a tiara!

Recommended as a background for other writers' work using Innsmouth and its peoples more than for its own merits. Ruthanna Emrys' Winter Tide is an excellent antidote for Lovecraft's xenophobia, as is Jordan Hawk's Widdershins series.

Holy hell that was one crazy ride. Another story that mentioned Arkham. I applaud Lovecrafts storytelling and plot making skills.

Maybe it was because I listened to it instead of reading it, but I just didn’t love this book. The writing style was just a narrator talking with maybe 2 monologues throughout the entire book, and the “accents” were terrible.

The idea of “horror” didn’t really strike me until the last 20 minutes or so. And even then, it was very Edgar Allan Poe like with the tapping on the door at the darkest part of night.

The ending was fairly good, gave a little twist that could definitely be predicted but nonetheless was built up really well. Just a meh book.
