The story itself was good and the dog-as-narrator approach was unique, but I found this extremely hard to get into. I did not think Enzo was lovable or even very dog-like in the story. He was wise, well-spoken, and extremely mature, unlike real-life dogs who, while they likely do understand what’s going on with their humans, are just not that intelligent (in a book smart sense). I mean, who has ever met a dog in real life that you could imagine saying things like “she had a full set of breasts for milking and hips wide enough for childbirth and so was, for all intents and purposes, an adult...” (pg 135). That kind of language coming from a dog was really a turn off for me and again made it hard to love the story.

I really enjoyed the perspective of Enzo. There were times that I got lost in the technical details of the racing explanations, but I didn't want to put this book down. and YAY for happy endings!

Update: This book will always make me cry and has forever changed the way I talk to and treat my dogs. I mean, I always treat my dogs well, but after reading this book (the first time), I've treated my dogs like humans in many ways. I speak to them as if they understand and I value the trust and affection they have for me in a different way after reading this book.

Loved this book. Any book that can make me laugh while crying gets two thumbs way up.

I absolutely loved this book. I won't say it is perfect, but it was lovely. The story is about a dog, who wants to be human, going over his life with his owner - a racecar driver - on the last day of his life. It's spiritual and lovely. It may not be so high-brow, but we all need something like this book now and then.
