I simply adored this first volume! I love everything about it: characters, the world, the writing, the storylines, etc.
First of all, the world building is superb. It's a bit confusing at first, but the writing lulls us in and gives us the elements we need little by little, without overwhelming us too much. I loved each of the worlds: dark underworld London and mysterious picturesque Oxford.
The characters are divinely crafted, with a special mention for our heroine, Paige. She is so realistic: a young badass in the making, cradled by innocence and doubts but also by a strength of vengeance, protection and a certain measured pride. There's a need for attachment that turns into devotion, and the trick is to know who she's going to give it to by letting go of the various strangleholds. I really like her youth too, her sullen, insolent and determined side.
And behind all that, a superbly woven scenario, thanks to a delicate and surprisingly fluid style of writing, given the complexity of this universe and the different groups of characters and issues involved. I laughed and shuddered at the scenes of struggle. This first volume could stand on its own, but - :) - our companions are going to be with us for a few more volumes!
I think this book suffered greatly from all the hype. I loved the story and the characters, but I constantly felt annoyed that her publisher had set her up for failure before she even had a chance. No, she is not the next J.K. Rowling, and that is OK. She shows a lot of promise with her character and world building. Few things make me happier than a well written, strong, and complex female protagonist, and Shannon definitely delivered with Paige Mahoney. She may not be the most self assured character, but she has so much potential. This book was a fantastic introduction to a series that has so much potential (as long as the pressure from the hype machine does not crush her.)
I read this in a day because I was off of work and didn’t really have anything else to do. There were a lot of fake words that I couldn’t pronounce and a lot of characters I never learned because they only appeared once or twice. Also the main characters only kissed once and their romance was weird….apparently there are 7 books in this series but I will not be reading the rest of them. Not the worst though!
