3.5 stars. I would NOT read this book if you are in recovery for an eating disorder. There are trigger warnings for many, many things. Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, eating disorder commentary, hospitalization.

Overall, I did like the book. The author did a really good job of getting into the head of Rose....which was also part of the problem.

Wow.

“Before I was admitted, I had to answer a questionnaire:
- Do you monitor what you eat?
- Do you count your caloric intake?
- Do you think you need to lose weight?
- Do you skip meals on purpose?
- Do you feel fat?
Ask any woman these questions. Admit us all to the facility! This is what you have done to us. This is your monster, and it’s starving.”

Body image, disordered eating, the toxic diet culture and one’s queerness. This book was heartbreaking, captivating and so powerful…. I did not want to put this one down. The twin and sibling relationship was messy, real and terrifying with their complex and unhealthy dynamics.

Did this book make me nervous to raise 3 girls, particularly twin girls? Yes. Did it make me think about my relationship with food? Yes. Did this book make me really uncomfortable at points? Absolutely! Did I still love this book? I totally did.

Be forewarned that there is just so many trigger warnings and this book will not be for everyone. Be cautious going into this one. As a therapist this opened my eyes and deepened my understanding which I really appreciated.

“Anorectics experience extreme weight loss. But you lose more than that. Hair, fingernails, teeth. You lose your friends, family, yourself. You lose your sense of the world. Of what is important beyond the not-eating. And, eventually, you lose it all. Your life. She’s greedy, anorexia is.”

truthfully no idea how this is a debut novel, i almost had no intention of reading it, but i'm glad i did. beautiful writing, the dialogue felt very genuine too like they were real people having real conversations. i would definitely read more from this author, can't believe i almost missed out on this one

TW⚠️: Eating disorder.

Mixed feelings. A lot of how I feel about it is based on how self-aware the book was, which I'm still not totally sure of (idk how to explain it without spoilers though). I wish there were a couple of healthy relationships to balance out the shitshow that every other relationship was. Strongly don't recommend this for anyone struggling with an eating disorder-- it gives so many tips about how to be anorexic and IDK why other reviews aren't really talking about that.
I also thought the facility seemed a bit unrealistic but then again, what do I know? All of this said, I think that if I had read it in 10th grade or something, it would have been one of my favorite books, so a solid 3.5 rounded up.
