God, so cool. I love how real the world feels and as much as it would be properly hard to live there, I wouldn't hesitate to follow Roland through a doorway to his world.

Every female character was defined in terms of sex or body shape, and I had enough of it.

don't let this first book keep you from reading the rest of them.

it took me ages to get through The Gunslinger, which was odd because i usually love Stephen King's books. but good god this one just did not hold my interest at all. the only reason i kept at it was because The Dark Tower is my mom's favorite set of books. i think it took me about six months to get through the majority of the book, and then around the last chapter or two i got completely sucked into the series. it took me less time to read the other seven books than it took me to read this first one.

tldr; while i didn't care for the first book, i'm so glad i kept reading it because the rest of the series is absolutely incredible.
