I don’t think this was a bad book but it wasn’t for me personally. It didn’t feel like a YA book but at the same time it did. I felt like the characters should have been older but since it is YA they were teens. And there was a lot of violence for being YA. Also, Greek gods are cruel! I wasn’t expecting that big twist either!

Lore is my hero! She kicked butt and took names. She took on so much by the end and still came out on top with more life to live. (A&P)

i’m not sure what went wrong. it’s technically a well-written book. the premise is enticing, so enticing that at some point it was my most anticipated release. yet it only captured my attention 40% into the book and was unable to maintain its momentum to keep me wanting for more. it was only at the last 10% of the book wherein it kept me on my toes and had me considering bumping up my rating to 2/5. but the way this book was concluded was disappointing, and changed my mind bumping its rating back down to 1/5. something interesting happens, then boom - it cuts to flashback to the past which would’ve been fine but it was boring.

personally, my main issue was how i didn’t care for any of its characters. lore has the typical gruesome backstory for a main character. but despite her strength as a female lead, her character feels one dimensional - lacking depth and a personality. there’s only so much you can do with an interesting premise when your characters are half-baked.

3.5 Stars. This was honestly so good! I loved the gods and the competition, and I loved the twists of the plot most of which I wasn’t expecting. There is a lot of information up front which was a bit of a slog, but I think once you fall into Bracken’s writing style the story flew by. All of the characters had so much depth to them, and I thought Bracken did an incredible job honing down on their respective drives. The one gripe I had about it was the age our main character Lore - when we see her life between the Agon, especially how/where she lived, it felt so unbelievable that I’d get thrown out of the story. That being said, I liked how Lore struggled with wanting to escape the Agon but also needing the glory, validation, and vengeance that participating would grant her.
