this was literally a 4 star read until the last couple of pages of the book..... the "big reveal" at the end literally RUINED everything for me. i loved the AI. i loved the plague. i loved seeing what's happening to human race through the eyes of so many different people. but religous ideals literally always ruin books for me.... holy shit....

anyways, can't wait to read the next one hehe

I thought this had a really interesting plot with solid characters.

The story beats and character arcs are very similar to the Walking Dead seasons 1-3…so honestly not too much of this book felt “fresh” but it was still entertaining.

If you like TWD or apocalypse stories, you’ll probably like this a lot.

I really wanted to like this book. I've read Chuck Wendig before and have enjoyed him. I vibed with parts of it - the premise of the book was interesting and some of the characters worked. But the whole of the book was less than the sum of its parts.

Several characters felt like they were superfluous, for one. And the ending? Oh, how I just hated the ending. It felt like it ruined so much of the book that came before.

There's also just how it hit me in this moment in time. This book was published in 2019. It's a story about a pandemic, and much of the conflict in the book is driven by a Trumpist political figure and his white nationalist followers. The allegory was far too on the nose to feel comfortable at times, but also just too over the top at others.
