A fast-paced fantasy with a sapphic love story at its heart 🫶🏼 this is my second read from Viano Oniomoh & i really enjoyed it! it’s so different from Just for the Cameras but I love a good romantasy.

For only being 300 something pages, a LOT happened. sometimes i felt like i had whiplash from everything that was going on lol. but i enjoyed it overall and loved getting to see the relationship & tension build between Moira and Nailah 🫶🏼 i wish we’d gotten to see a little more of the conflict resolution between Moira & her family at the end, but i saw the character growth overall!!

I picked up Fragments of a Fallen Star after someone described it as “queer pirates.” And queer pirates it gives! Although the fantasy and plot elements are rather clunky and too convenient, the main romance and the diverse display of types of love, from friendship to companionship to desire, let this book shine.

Really cute book. I feel like the ending with her parents could have been fleshed out more. But definitely worth the read.

I'm DNF-ing for real this time!! I can't do it anymore. I didn't like Moira at all. I get everyone grieves differently, but the way she treats people pissed me off and all her actions are selfish in a way I can't vibe with. She lost me for gopd when she decided she was going to endanger the whole ship by taking out her earplugs around sirens. Everyone knows you use earplugs for sirens!!! And she's on her way to try and resurrect her parents, but thinks she doesn't need earplugs?!?!?! Please. I kept waiting for her to gain a likeable trait, for me to care about her goals and desires, but no dice. I'm upset because I love pirates and stories with pirates and I kinda hated this one. Justice for Nailah! I'd love her if she was in a different story.

The pacing of this book didn't work for me quite as well as other books by Viano but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story. I loved this more "traditional" fantasy story and all that it included: vivid world building, sea based stories, a unique magic system, found family full of love, queer people that aren't othered, surprise secret royals etc.
Reading this just further cemented Viano Oniomoh as one of my favorite authors.

disclaimer: i really need to stop reading ebooks bc they never do it for me. i think if i had read a physical copy of this book, i would've enjoyed it sooo much more. but! i still do think it was fun! i liked the magic and adventure and of course, the slow burn romance!
