I was not a fan. I heard barely anything about Anne. I like hearing about her kids but I miss the magic of Anne herself. Most of the book is just recounting gossip. So yeah. Not a re-read.

This book really needed more concise direction. I don’t have a problem with Anne no longer being the main character. I enjoyed her children. But bouncing between the perspectives was done poorly. The Meredith children storyline was hard to read.
lighthearted

Wow. This was another amazing Anne of Green Gables novel- and though we found ourselves following several new characters for the most part and Anne was off to the side, this story still had the same spirit as the six previous. The foreshadowing for WW1…

The weakest of the Anne books. Still good for low calorie, fun comforting,  middleschool age appropriate family stories.

I feel bad giving this rating, but let me explain...

So, I got a boxset equivalent on Audible which I thought was the The Complete Anne of Green Gables and this was a massive jump from the last one, which was Anne's House of Dreams - 13 years later, I think I worked out! And it starts out with Anne and Gilbert returning with their kids (last time I checked Anne had only just given birth to one kid!) from a tour of Europe?! Cue confusion... but I just kept listening...

This book covers the adjacent family, the children who live in the neighbouring manse, and their various struggles with having no one to 'bring them up' because their father is just so absent-minded and generally useless. I know that men weren't used to bringing up children, but I felt so frustrated with the father throughout. The kids end up starting a club to punish themselves whenever they do something that the community perceives as wrong, and it's heart-breaking and kind of... well, it's just so wrong. They starve themselves for perfectly innocent misdemeanours, and it's sort of painful to read - although only sort of because I never felt that connected to them.

Such a frustrating read! Why wasn't I getting to know about Anne and Gilbert's children? Honestly, I didn't really care much about these kids; I'm here for Anne! And she's just a very minor secondary character known as Mrs Blythe, who does stand up for the kids, but not in a meaningful way. Where is the Anne I know and love?? (Also, I am so BORED of Cornelia going on about Methodists. Seriously, I don't even care anymore).

When I finished, and came to record it, I realised this is book seven. What happened to book six? Aha, some of the mystery solved - my 'complete' audio reading misses out book six. And book four for that matter (Anne of Ingleside, which makes sense as to why there was another jump there but I just kind of accepted it despite being disappointed not seeing Anne as a teacher a bit more). Why have something called 'The Anne of Green Gables Collection' when it misses out two key books?! (I admit, I should've known something was weird going on with the skip from book three to five, but my head has been all over the place, and I just thought Montgomery was making an odd narrative decision).

Anyway, this is turning into a rant - sorry! So, now I'll have to go back and listen/read Anne of Ingleside and book six, which will hopefully tell me about Anne's kids, and I'll get to see Anne as a mother.

Obviously, my rating reflects the order of reading the books; maybe I'll feel more kindly towards it when I have the gaps filled in...
