4.5? I think I’m becoming a horror genre fan?

DNF at page 124.

I am actually enjoying the book, but it is a tad slow. I have other things I want/need to read and I just can't focus on this book. Maybe I will come back to it in audiobook format. But for now I'm putting it down.

the paul tremblay formula strikes again: unreliable narrator, blurred lines between paranormal/psychological/reality, and themes of identity/loneliness/masking.

i'm one of those people that enjoys said formula, but if you weren't a fan of the pallbearer's club, don't even bother with this one. it follows very similar plot beats combined with less interesting characters and basically all the same themes. not a bad book, but also not the most surprising followup to the pallbearer's club (which is a book i deeply love, by the way). the pallbearer's club was different, and this was also different, but in the exact same way.

i also don't know that we can call tremblay's books "horror" anymore - they're more like literary fiction ABOUT horror than actual genre books at this point. (this is a neutral statement, because i enjoy the writing regardless, but something to take into account when choosing to read or not read this book or any future works by him).

This was great fun. A good balance of supernatural and the horror of people. Nostalgia and new. I thought the screenplay table read / story / reboot format worked great. It was especially good as an audiobook. I love the unreliable narrator vibes.

Format is hard to follow.  Try physically book over audio.
