Just when I was complaining that a certain main character hadn't done anything all book or exhibited any sort of personality, we got some nice time for them to open up and bloom a bit before the brutal cliffhanger of an ending.

It's lovely watching our protagonist grow as a person, opening up, learning to ask for help, and forming close friendships with other girls. (The unexpected LGBT+ representation was a nice bonus!) There was at least one plot point in here that didn't really make any sense to me, but the emotional through line and building themes stop me from giving it less than five stars.

I enjoyed it in the main but I felt some sections were a bit too protracted, whereas other areas were rushed through. Also I felt some of the characters lacked some depth. Though it ended with a lot of loose ends, and I enjoyed it enough to reach out and read the final book in thr trilogy.

What a book! Just as good as the first but omg the ending. Unbelieveable, glad I don't have to wait for the next one!

Certainly didn't disappoint but I liked the first book a bit more. I think the way the cliffhanger ending of book 1 came into play was good as it made Orion an unknown quantity once again and I liked how Novik uses the characters lack of knowledge about the situation outside the school. However the romance between El and Orion made me want to reach for the eye-bleach. It was just so awkward and they both had a terrible case of the stupids but I'm definitely not saying it was badly written - they are both weird teenagers locked in a building together, if anything it is too accurate. I did like the resulting disapproval from El's mouse familiar though!

While the romance was painful I really enjoyed the platonic relationships and rivalries. After seeing the isolation El experiences at the beginning of book one it is very satisfying to see her with such a great group of friends! El very much grows into herself not just socially but also with regards to her powers and what she wants her life after the Scholomance to look like and that is also really nice to watch. Which makes that ending a real kick in the gut!

I'm still reeling from the end of the book as I write this, but I'll try to collect my thoughts.

First of all, the whole premise of this series is the perfect mix of thrilling and dark and ingenious. The attention to detail and the immersive storytelling create a fantastic atmosphere. Even though this is the second book, there's still a decent amount of time spent on explanations/worldbuilding, and one of my few criticisms would be that these explanatory snippets, though interesting and relevant, sometimes interrupted the plot in an awkward place. We'd stop in the middle of a conversation to dissect some interesting tidbit, and by the time the conversation went on I'd forgotten what was going on. It was all still interesting to read and I didn't mind it much.
The character growth in this book, especially compared to the first book, is fairly slow and subtle, but it comes through like a punch to the gut at the best moments. Especially towards the end, there were many moments where I audibly gasped or made other incredulous gestures as the threads all tied together. Sometimes it was painful to see the characters apparently not growing or changing for most of the novel, but in retrospect it was an intentional choice to portray them that way, especially since the story is from El's perspective, who doesn't always pick up on what's going on behind the scenes in other people's lives.
It had been over a year since I read ADE, so I was a bit lost at the start of this book - there's not much of a recap or handy reminders to jog your memory, but a quick Google search solved that for me.
The writing style is amazing. There are vivid (and sometimes appropriately disturbing) descriptions, and El's voice as a teenager with the world on her shoulders was authentic, exciting, and often hilarious! Despite the darker contents of the book, El's narration and quick wit provided some great laugh-out-loud comic relief.

I read both this and the first book back to back, this one thanks to getting a proof copy because I’m a bookseller, and FUCK ME I’m going to find Orion and kill him myself. I did have a little cry at the end when
Sudarat went through the portal and then didn’t stop until I realised that something TRULY bad was going to happen because everything was going SUSPICIOUSLY WELL
. Anyway this series has so far gotten me out of a terrible reading slump and owns my ass. Precious forever.
