This is another reading support book for my freshmen next term. As far as I know it is about a German boy who fights in WWII and gets injured in a battle against the Russians. In order to survive, he pretends to be Russian and joins their army. It should be a really fun read-- adventure, survival, identity, growing-up....

A gripping, realistic account of a less popular area of World War II--the Russian front, from the German point of view. A young German soldier is injured in a tank battle and in a desperate attempt to keep from being killed, he changes uniforms with a dead Russian soldier. Since his grandmother was Russian, he can speak and understand the language, and so he is able to pass himself off as a Russian soldier with amnesia. He recovers in a field hospital and forms friendships with other Russians, and especially a Russian nurse. but soon Germans arrive and there are more battle scenes and frantic escapes... Very realistic, gory, shows you what war is really like. Has an optimistic ending though. I found it fascinating because my German grandfather was in that war, as a nonviolent combatant--he was a Lutheran minister, so he was put to work raising telephone poles all along the front lines. That wasn't mentioned in this book, of course, but it gave me a peek into what some of that horror must have been like.

This book is unbelievable. Now, I'm going to put this out there- it is a good book, but I don't get any closure. Which makes sense, you think about how much they lost and what they sacrificed to get there. It is very action packed and keeps you on your feet.

Soldier X is based on the true story of a German man and Russian woman’s experiences in World War II. Somewhere out there, there are descendants of the people who inspired the characters of Erik and Tamara, and the fact that these two people lived to tell their story is amazing.
