This was the second book I've read by this author, and I think at this point, that's enough for me to add her to my list of writers whose work I buy every time they release something new. The story here was wildly original and compelling, and while there was one small aspect of it that was predictable, for the most part I was dying to find out where it went and spent every possible spare minute reading. I absolutely loved the creativity and the richness of the characters and setting and I cannot wait to read more by this author.

a nicely creeping air of the gothic, great atmosphere and a strong sense of place that’s easy to imagine and, i do really love a story that incorporates bees as a character, and the magic (both the literal and figurative) of keeping them.

unfortunately, Ellerie doesn’t feel as fully fleshed out and the relationship with her siblings, parents and romantic interest all lack depth for me, so the plot points that hinge on these relationships don’t feel meaningful.

(also this is petty, and my own issue, but amount of times Ellerie feels something “in the pit of her stomach” as a way to translate dread was a lot of times too many.)

not sure i’ll remember this one in a week or so.
