I grew up playing soccer and was more attuned to the USWNT as they were naturally my idols. Besides WC 2002 (USA was robbed by the non handball call on Germany in the Quarter Finals!), it wasn’t until WC South Africa 2010 that I started focusing more on the men’s side of the sport.
As a defender/backup keeper, I’ve generally paid more attention to those players and Tim Howard quickly became a favorite. It’s not just being good, or even great- it’s how you treat those around you on and off the field. Confidence is one thing, you need to be sure of who you are and what you are doing. Howard recalling his feelings from his time at MU for making *A* mistake and self imposing, in addition to coaching, pressure on himself- it’s a familiar feeling even if you don’t play for the top Premier League team…
Frequently I see egos of “star” players (usually strikers… surprise, surprise) as a turn off for teams/players I will support, or not. I had always seen Tim supporting his player AND be friendly to opponents (though maybe not “Boneheaded”. I’ll have to look into that incident more). Thankfully the year Howard retired from MLS’s Colorado Rapids I was able to see him play vs Atlanta United!
A great read/listen for soccer fans and an excellent read for anyone with disabilities who thinks they can’t succeed because of it… it’s not correct and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise!!!
