I was surprised to like this more than the Shining. We get to see Dan again and we learn more about how the shining works. I was entertained the whole time and was satisfied with the ending.

I did not love The Shining but I was still curious to know more about Dan Torrance and what happened to him when he grew up. Dan ends up struggling with alcoholism like his father and eventually starts finding ways to manage his alcoholism. His shine is then put to use at a hospice where he helps people pass on and gives them some relief in their last moments. Throughout all this he is being contacted by someone via telepathic messages as well as writing on a chalkboard where he keeps track of patients. At first the messages are innocent but eventually they start talking about murder and danger so Dan has to find out more.
There are still aspects of King's writing that are still sexist, racist, and ableist, so I can't give it the 5 stars it might have had without these inclusions. Compared to The Shining, this book does better in a lot of ways since I couldn't stop reading this 500+pg book.

The beginning of this book is horrible, but mostly because you have to accept precious little Danny is no longer precious little Danny. After you’ve let that sink in, the book is pretty good. But having to see Danny as he is as an adult in the beginning was so hard I nearly quit right off the bat.

This is a complete shift in tone and atmosphere from The Shining. I despise who Dan has become. There are several gross-out passages. This really feels like he’s just happened to use the same supernatural system as The Shining and shoehorned Danny in.

Not as good as the original, but I read it in three days and  was engaged through the whole thing. I feel like it was a bit disconnected from the original, which is okay but wasn't to my liking.
