We have come to the end of the fun adventurous Spellslinger series. Crownbreaker is a satisfying conclusion, but it is not my favorite book of the series. I actually think this book was a slight step down from the last three books.
Where Crownbreaker stumbles for me is plot. It is a very travel here, get foiled here, travel somewhere new, and get foiled once again. For being the final book in the series I was hoping for a much more explosive finale. That is how it was shaping up to be with this huge oncoming war. Sadly, it was anticlimactic at best. Still fun. Still full of adventure.
I don't want to say a lot because this is the final book, but you do get a lot of closure. That is one thing this final book did really well. I felt that most of the plot threads that stated were taken care of. There were a couple threads left for some possible future books, but nothing that left you needing immediate answers.
The final character arc Kellen goes on is great. I definitely think it delivered. There is great family dynamic throughout whether that family be blood or chosen. Something I always loved about this series were its side characters. Each installment introduced you to some wild and interesting people. Crownbreaker was a culmination of everyone Kellen has met over the course of the series. Seeing how everyone comes together to play there post was a really nice touch.
Lastly the one thing that sort of irked me was the magic system. It is without a doubt very interesting and has so much promise. However, de Castell kind of blocks himself into a corner. He is never able to flesh it out or show off its full potential. I think having Kellen so limited when it came to magic made the magic system limited as well. In my honest opinion.
All in all I think Spellslinger is great fun. Definitely a series full of adventure, action, humor, and not afraid to go dark. I for one recommend it if your looking for something fast and easy.
Spellslinger - 4/5
Shadowblack - 4/5
Charmcaster - 4.25/5
Soulbinder - 4.5/5

Crownbreaker - 4/5
Spellslinger Series - 25.25/30
