I've read this in 2017 but I've forgotten all of it so it was like I read a brand new story. The writing was somewhat simplistic but the intensity of this was superb. It was very long time ago since I've read a thriller book where I was so intensley engaged and glued to the page. I had to take breaks on this as my emotions while reading this book where so intense and this was one of the rare novels that actually made me wanna bite my nails. The kidnapping in the beginning, is not the worst I've read but Nicci French made it feels like I could Imagen the discomfort and horror to be in the situation. And the story after just keept the intensity. ( Wow how many time can I use the word intense?

This book was really hard for me to get through. Not gripping to me at all.

I finished this book in a night...I kept reading because I was a bit freaked out. It was mostly good - kept me reading - but I was disappointed by the actions of Abbie, and I was very disappointed by the ending (Mya, not for you, for although it's "happy" it's not very clear).

This book was really promising to start with. I thought it was going to be a "Gone Girl" or "Girl on a Train" type of book but better because it was written by Nicci French. Unfortunately the last third was a real let down. Also although the narrator was very clear I don't think she was good for thriller / suspense type stories - there was no build up. I cannot decide if it is worthy of 4 stars or only 3.

Maybe it was because I had the unfortunate pleasure of reading two of Gillian Flynn's books at the beginning of summer, or maybe it was something else. Gillian Flynn has given me impossibly high expectations for every mystery/thriller I pick up, so maybe my "it was okay" rating is a bit harsh. But, really, The Land of the Living was okay. I found myself addicted to the mystery and I went along with most of the character's decisions, but all in all I found it a bit frustrating. I don't consider this a spoiler considering it is written on the inside flap, but the fact that the authorities do not do more to aid in Abbie's recovery and case drives me crazy. It ate at me throughout the entire book, even the parts that I enjoyed. You're telling me that NO ONE is going to take this seriously? Other than this huge oversight (it essentially drives the rest of the plot), I enjoyed the thrill and panic of it all. Abbie is smart, cautious, and driven and I will probably give Nicci French another try.
