Mijn eerste Nicci French, ik had nog eens zin in een thriller en besloot een boek van dit schrijvend echtpaar te proberen.
Ik ben blij dat ik dat gedaan heb! Je wordt onmiddellijk in het boek gezogen: een vrouw zit opgesloten en vastgebonden. Ze weet niet waar of waarom, laat staan door wie. Het enige wat ze zich nog kan herinneren is haar naam: Abbie.
De schrijfstijl van het echtpaar French is fijn. Korte zinnen, zo heb ik het graag bij thrillers, het leest vlot en snel. Het boek bestaat uit drie delen, die een specifiek deel van het verhaal vertellen. het derde deel is het langste en vond ik zelf het interessantste. Als lezer wordt je mee in het ongewisse gelaten en begin je aan alles te twijfelen.
Er zat heel wat spanning in het verhaal, I like. Maar het einde stelde me teleur, ik had iets anders (iets geloofwaardiger?) verwacht. En ook meer uitleg over het waarom. Als een man vrouwen opsluit en wilt vermoorden wil ik weten waarom...
afgezien van het einde dat wat sterker mocht zijn is dit een thriller zoals het moet zijn: spannend, je raast er door heen door de fijne schrijfstijl. Ik heb dit boek midden in de nacht uitgelezen, dat zegt al veel.
Ik ga zeker nog een boek van Sean French en Nicci Gerard lezen. Ik vind het trouwens intrigerend dat ze als koppel samen een boek kunnen schrijven. Hun reeks over Frieda Klein wil ik dan absoluut ook eens proberen.

A brilliant book dealing with the theme of psychological amnesia. I had recently read another story about following one's footsteps but still other than the theme everything was a thrill ride in its own way.

One star sounds harsh because I did read it all and I wanted to know the ending, but I did not enjoy the journey.
I though Abbie was an absolute fool. That isn't the word I want to call her but I figure I'll get kicked off GR if I use anything stronger.
She was kidnapped and was threatened with death then she spent the rest of the book walking from one dangerous situation into another. She was flakey and rude and illogical.
"I got kidnapped and nearly died and I have amnesia and no house or money, can I stay with you? Your baby woke me up, you're so selfish I cannot possibly stay here!"
She got money and then spent the whole lot of haircuts, new clothes and taxis. She gave it away to people of the street and kept just buying wine...
I'm not sure if I am expressing it clearly enough but I hated Abbie. She ruined the book.
The plot was actually great. It was paced fairly well and was different to the usual plot. I genuinely wanted to know what had happened and who had done it. I was suspicious of everyone, even if Abbie did just go off with every Terry, Dick and Ben in the book without a care.
Usually I don't like plots where no one believes the 'hero' but this one worked because there was no evidence and Abbie was the most unreliable of narrators. So even I was skeptical.
I also found the writing style a bit annoying. It was super listy (real word) instead of one or two examples it would go on and on and on until I was thinking, for goodness sake I get the picture, get on with it!
In short. I liked the idea but not necessarily the end product.

*3.5* Nicci French stelt mij nooit teleur. Hele fijne schrijfstijl wat goed te volgen is. Echter vond ik dit boek op sommige moment wat traag. Uiteindelijk is het wel heel spannend geworden. Maar het einde gaf me niet echt een "whatttt?!" Gevoel. Wat ik normaal gesproken wel bij hun boeken ervaar. Uiteindelijk wel een aanrader!
