Been listening to this book on and off over a year. A smidge dry, but extremely informational. Definitely will be more mindful after reading this… and hopefully get less stomach aches

I read this book hoping to learn more about some gut issues I've been having for the past few years. Similar to many cases described in this book, all tests have shown no source of my problems. It was nice to read about people struggling with issues similar to mine and learn some of the potential reasons for them. I enjoyed learning the science behind why stress affects the gut. However, I found a lot of the book repetitive. Also, if you're someone like me who has struggled with food/diets in the past, parts of this book can be frustrating. He also touches on a lot of factors that influence our gut and brain that we as individuals have no control over. Overall, if you've suffered from stomach and gut issues that doctors have not been able to solve, reading this book can provide a little clarity and maybe make you feel less alone, but again it can be frustrating to learn that so many things that might help are ultimately out of your control (how livestock are raised, the presence of emulsifiers and pesticides in our food, the maternal condition's effect on the gut).
Interesting but didn't learn much and found myself not paying much attention. Overall, Mediterranean diet, no artificial sweeteners, mindfulness and don't eat when you're stressed.
A little more technical than expected. Also having been originally published in 2016 I felt some of the research is likely to be outdated. I definitely would be interested in something a little more geared towards a lay person

I got frustrated by the suggestions for improving things. Recovering from mental health crises isn't a simple matter of going to the doctor, if you even have access and are believed and supported; there's also the side effects of treatment and how those are going to impact your original physical complaints to consider. Also, the reasons so many live in a pre-disease state link to hyper capitalist work and life demands, which don't exist in individual vacuums. It's not a situation that can solely be resolved at the individualist level, except for the tiny minority of those in complete control of their work and with absolute financial stability.
