THIS WAS SO FUN! This is definitely in the ‘‘Assistant to the Villain” category of books. Very much knew what it was doing, playing on all the tropes we were expecting, and upending us again and again. I didn’t see a lot of it coming, and wondered how the gang could get out of all the holes being dug. And a very cool gang it is, love it when every character is unique and rad. So livid it’s part of a series though, I had no idea! Can’t wait for the next one.
Wanted this to be good but struggled, just didn't grab my attention.

Hated that it ended on a cliffhangar! I hope there's a happy ending eventually.

Long Live Evil is an over-the-top, riotous romp of a dark fantasy and stereotypical tropes that set fire to the fantasy genre rule book and danced gleefully around the burning embers. Nothing about this book was what I expected from reading the blurb. I can only describe the plot as unhinged, cringy, full of pop culture being out there, and ridiculous. Still, it was entertaining, engaging, and devilishly fun to read (even though sometimes I wasn't quite sure what was happening. My head spun in places with all the plot threads and twists packed into the story.
Brennan's writing boasts a weird and wonderful charm that combines grave, harrowing, and heartfelt moments in a mind-boggling read full of snarky dialogue, catty banter, and villainous subterfuge. She got a wonderful sense of humour that's deployed marvelously to make this a riot to read in this chaotic world of endearing-evil lemmings doing wicked things for their agendas. My favourite characters were Rae and Key. I mean, who doesn't want their very own adoring psychopathic minion willing to kill or give their life for you during a Zombie invasion?
You are either going to love or despise Long Life Evil. It's like one of those 80s movies you can't decide if you love or hate because it's weird, fun, and terrible, yet it manages to pull it off in a stylish, awesome way. Ultimately, I ended up enjoying Long Live Evil despite the slow start and long winding road to the big spoiler finale. Will I be checking Book 2 out? Yes, I am adding to my watch list for Netgalley next year.
