Oops I’m responsible for my algorithm, and I messed myself up with this one…

This book could’ve easily been half the length with a better editor: quite a few chapters were regurgitated scenes that I’ve just read but done in another supporting character’s POV. The adults in here suck, and a lot (if not all) of their decisions were implausible. CPS should’ve been called on all of them.

Tedious reading.

Bonus 0.25⭐️ because I actually got to learn a bit about rugby 🏉

I don’t know how to express my love for this book. It was a very real love story similar to Normal People (not just the Irish connection). And it’s a 600+ page slow burn which I LOVED. And Gibsie is my favourite ofc!

“I can take you home when you have to go?
What the actual fuck?
I might as well have shouted, love me, fucking love me at the girl.
I felt like a bleeding eejit.”

Wow, I am surprised I finished the book in two days.
The size of it intimidates me, and I am not going to lie.
It's a huge book, and before I started it, I heard it was a slow burn.

But it wasn't really a slow burn.
Sure, the characters' plotlines and storylines were lengthy, and I enjoyed it.
The story and flow seem more natural and genuine with the friendship bonds and feelings and slowly learning of their character and story.

I enjoyed the balance of the 2 POVs, with the involvement of their friends, families and, of course, "villains."
Over time, while we see the friendship bond between Johnny and Shannon, we then learn of their struggles in their own life.
It's hard to read on some of them (please read trigger warnings), but it was an important topic to speak and read up on.

The ending definitely broke me, and I am nervous and excited to continue the read.

“I just wanted her. For keeps.”

I’d been looking forward to reading this for a long time. Unfortunately, a lot of it felt unnecessarily long. I don’t see the appeal with Johny. I prefer Joey and Gibsie.

This story was so much more than "a rugby romance". If you're looking for a tough stuff young adult story, this is it. There is a love story but it's very much B-plot.
Shannon and Johnny do not have a happy ending at the end of this book.

Heavy Triggers for:
Child abuse
Abusive family dynamics
eating disorders
Abandonment
Bullying
Social pressure
Anxiety
Alcoholism

Please read with care and caution.

After years of bullying Shannon Lynch is finally getting a new start at Tommen High School. She'll be with friends she hasn't seen in years and it gives her a few hours day away from her abusive home life. Everything is going great her first day. That is until and unportioned accident on the rugby field and throws her in the path of Tommens golden boy.

Johnny Kavaugh is a rugby god to his peers but is hiding a secret that could lead to the end of his career before it's even began. He's injured, badly. After an outburst on the field he's crosses paths with Shannon, like the river, and he's completely gone for.

If you aren't sobbing by the end, you're heartless.
