This is such an interesting and exciting way to read fantasy specifically that regarding Fae. I think the academic part of my brain was itched with this one, specifically in the sense of the footnotes and generally academic overarching theme of the narrative. Regardless the journal entries as a way to provide the story to readers was such a fun choice and while I was initially nervous, I found myself really enjoying that part of the story. Of course I was completely intrigued and committed to the characters and found them to be both approachable and lovable. The relationship development as well was really well done. I found the entire thing very exciting and I can't wait to read the next one!

Cute for sure, but I enjoyed the setting and the interactions between townspeople more than the actual plot. I lost interest about 2/3 through but the cozy atmosphere was enough to keep me going.

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries is so cute! One of the better Cozy Fantasies that I've read, and reminded me SO much of Howl's Moving Castle. Wendell is the most Howl Pendragon-coded character since Howl himself - how could you not love him? Of course, Emily Wilde is also a very appealing no-nonsense academic and I didn't mind being inside her journal (except for the Wendell's POV chapter... I didn't like that chapter lol).

For a pretty short, cozy fantasy, we found plenty of time to learn our characters' motivations, understand this world with its huge network of faeries, and have plenty of fun (and less fun) encounters. Genuinely scary faeries are my favorite type and there's plenty of that to balance out the few friendly ones we meet. My only complaint was that the ending went by so fast I felt like I blinked and missed it, but it's supposed to be cozy so I know that's on par for the genre, it's just not something that I love.
