I am very excited to finally see WWII on the horizon in this series. I describe it as a "slow burn" to prospective readers because I need them to understand that Maisie isn't about action and adventure as much as she is about peeling away the layers of the people who lived through WWI.
Here, we see Maisie starting to separate from her own practice and begin to take orders from the Secret Service. She is nosing around a small college dedicated to the practice of peace but which may harbor traitors (both foreign and domestic?). The Nazis may be infiltrating Britain and Maisie is on the case to discover what the younger generation could find appealing about their philosophies.
Simultaneously, Maisie falls back into romantic doubt-- this time with her new beau, James Compton. Can Maisie finally trust her heart, especially when the postmarks on James' letters look as if he may be deceiving her?
These cozy mysteries are a pleasure to read, and can be recommended to people who love bittersweet romance, historical studies, and all-too-human heroines.

Another strong entry in the series, this one focuses a bit more on the looming threat of the rising Nazi party in Germany and its potential effect on England. There are really two mysteries here, and as sometimes happens, the lesser of the two seems a bit more interesting. Winspear could have benefitted as well by showing us a bit more of Maisie teaching philosophy. Lots of little bits of Maisie's personal life, as well.

another wonderful installment in the maisie dobbs series. the only bad part - i don't know when #9 will be released or if i can wait that long!
Maisie gets caught up in Secret Service stuff investigating a college in Cambridge and at the same time trying to work out what happened with Sandra, a girl she knew from service. Her work as a detective has become complicated by her mission and she's trying to do the best for herself and for others.
Maisie tries hard to please everyone, not sure that she's pleasing herself as often as she should. Her relationship with James Compton is also interesting to see and her doubts and worries are out there.
I like this series, there are times when I want it to move faster but it's the Downton Abbey of Cosies.
