The concept was so cool and the world building was impressive but man, it could have been trimmed down to half. Paolini included so many descriptions of transitions, whether it was preparing for action on the ship, moving through a location, or just like, getting ready for bed that I got bored and fully lost interest in the overall plot. I wish it moved much faster.
I picked this up again determined to finish it, even though it was 32 hours long on audio! Fortunately I listen at 1.5X so it wasn't quite that long for me, but it still took forever.
This should have been split into at least 2 books. The appendices at the end were largely unnecessary other than the timeline, because it was fictional science. If it wasn't fictional, we'd be traveling at light speed (in space) by now.
Kira's journey was fascinating but sad. It seemed like an endless struggle of her trying to figure out who she was. I think it was more cerebral than I would have liked, although that's just me. Paolini can do whatever he wants with his story and I respect that. This was very introspective rather than action based and plot driven. It was all about the characters, primarily Kira.
The ending was sad. I had hoped for a more positive end, but no, it was just sad. I had a feeling it was coming and although Paolini lessened the blow, it still came. I didn't feel satisfied by it at all.
Jennifer Hale was amazing. She did accents, personalities, and generally hit it out of the park with her audio narration. She may well have elevated the book in my opinion from a 3 star to a 4. I'd call it a solid 3.5, rounded up.
In the end, I'm glad I read this. I don't think I'd recommend it, though. It's just too long and I wouldn't want to subject anyone to that.

I'm putting this aside for now. I'm just not up for such a long book. I also don't like the way we're thrown into the world and its technology. I don't like feeling like I have to catch up at the outset.
I may pick it up later but for now, it's a miss for me.

This is an okay book; decent characters, interesting plot, fast-paced despite the length. I just didn’t really like it. It was a struggle to complete due to being too wordy, which made this truly exhausting to read. There was a lot of repetition with the space travel. The action scenes went on literally forever. It was super realistic but too realistic for my taste. Like the bureaucracy felt real to the point of getting on my nerves. No rock was left unturned, and while I appreciate the thoroughness on some level, it was too much. And I didn’t dislike the ending, but I wasn’t happy with it either. It wasn’t as complete as I would like after spending 800+ pages with these characters. And it was a little weird? I’m not mad that I read it, but I definitely won’t be recommending it to others.

This book is a MONSTER! So big and so detailed, and is definitely one I’d have to read several times to absorb everything. Not exactly the light read I was looking for to start off 2022 ha ha
