Lucky: A Memoir

Alice Sebold

3.73 AVERAGE

While Lovely Bones is getting the kudos, Alice Sebold's account of her rape is powerful and important.

Follow up book to Lovely Bones. It's the true story of the author's rape. It's compelling, but not an unusual story, especially having read the Lovely Bones.

Alice Sebold manages to tell the tale of her rape with humanity and humour in a remarkable way. Difficult but worthwhile. It really opens your eyes. Not always the easiest reading but important.

As good if not better than 'The Lovely Bones' mostly because its true. The author hauls you along unceremoniously as her life is upended and she has no choice but to fight for recontrol.

Years ago I gave this book 4 stars, but now it’s down to 1 star for a innocent man wrongly convicted of rape. I hope Ms. Sebold gives all her proceeds from this book to Anthony Broadwater because sorry would never be enough. Time he will never get back.

A true story of the amazing ability of humankind to work through trauma and thrive.

I really don't know how I feel about this, especially after reading articles about what happened.

Tragic, shocking, horrifying, real, heart-wrenching. A first hand account of how rape changes your life and how one never learns or undoes the identity of the victim. It opened up a whole new breadth of understanding for me.

I enjoyed this book much more than I expected, not the chick lit vibe I was looking for, very dark. The author was very brave to share her rape, an intensely traumatic event that she can't seem to escape.

However, I wish the novel would not have included the afterward. Alice went into her days as a drug addict and it didn't fit. It seemed like she was packing in an equally difficult part of her life into a few pages. This issue should have been given its own time, its as if she planned it for another novel and then tacked a summary on to the end of this one. I felt bad for Alice, but mostly just confused as to what had happened between rape recovery and drug addiction.

I first read Alice Sebold when I picked up a copy of the Lovely Bones at the airport when my flight was delayed for ten hours. I finished the book in one sitting and I loved it. To this day, it is still one of my favorite books and I still find myself thinking about it often.

When I decided to read Lucky, I knew it would be different since it was a memoir. I loved this probably almost as much as I loved "The Lovely Bones". This book was powerful and inspiring. I have to read "The Almost Moon" now, and sincerley hope that Alice will write another book.

I would recommend this book to anyone. Everyone who criticizes that everything in her life became about the rape, shoudl take some time to think about how they would handle a brutal event such as this in their life. Alice took years to come to terms with what happened to her and Lila even after her rapist was convicted and sentenced. Give this one a chance. You will not regret your decision.
