Lucky: A Memoir

Alice Sebold

3.73 AVERAGE

It's the story of the author's rape at age 18 while a freshman in college, how she prosecuted the rapist and how it affected her life. The book is an intense read but surprisingly funny in places. While I wouldn't say it's "uplifting" exactly, it's not as much of a downer as you might expect, and I it made me want to read more by her.

What a great book! It gives a horrifying view of her life during and after a brutal rape. The audio book is read by the author, and I definitely felt like she portrayed the ordeal in a way that made me want to reach out and protect her. It gave lots of insight into the judicial system and you felt so frustrated for her.

Heartwrenching account of Sebold's personal experience, which explained also why 'The Lovely Bones' is such a vivid and enchanting tale. Every word is a prove of bravery. As a psychology student who mostly reads about PTSD and how to deal with that through textbooks, this book helps me a lot in understanding PTSD. Also remind us that in rape cases, practice of blaming the victim is still existed.
challenging dark emotional sad medium-paced

This book was exactly what I needed.

While it's gruesome and graphic, it's honest. It's real. Sebold does not shy away from what it's like to be raped or how it feels to struggle in the aftermath.

It took me three tries to finish this book and I'm so glad I did.

Very intense memoir. Loved it!

Simply amazing. Alice Sebold pulls no punches and the book is better for it. It's grim, uplifting and inspiring all at the same time and manages to convey that the road to recovery is very long one.

Better than Lovely Bones but a much more serious topic.
dark sad tense fast-paced

I wanted to read this book again and give it a better chance, and I wanted to like this book I really did. It wasn't the subject matter of this book that really disturbed me, more of the overall feel of this book. There wasn't anything really to be learned of it in a sense, there's just this strange atmosphere that can be felt throughout the book that I didn't really enjoy reading it. To be honest, there wasn't really anything wrong with the book- I just didn't like it.

A painful, breathtaking book -- the true story of a rape where the reader is pulled along with the author's emotions in real time. The terror, fear, and helplessness of the rape, the numbness and anxiety of the aftermath,
Spoilerthe victory of the successful trial
, and the dull ache of the realization that nothing is as over as we'd like to believe. Vulnerable, authentic, and powerful
