The narrator is describing someone who has a disability a lot like a child my school as "misshapen" and given that every other book by this author has had some sort of offensive thing in it I don't really feel I want to continue. Finally free of him.

Really funny and heart-warming. I can't stop laughing when I saw the teachers' nicknames and the illustrations :D Exciting and full of unexpected events as well---you never know what's going to happen next!
This is my first David Walliams book and it's perfect for Roald Dahl fans!

My experience of reading this was marred by how poorly the book translates to Kindle format layout-wise. Having occasional words in larger/differently formatted text (which I admired in the print edition while browsing) merely added to my irritation and confusion. Maybe this is geared toward children's different cognitive processes or it's maybe just me, but I was confused by the setup at the start, annoyed by the stereotypes/negative representation (gender, disabled) and unamused overall. I love Walliams on screen; I think I'll stick to that from now on.

I have loved Walliams' stories since I was spell bound by "Awful Aunty" but I have been less impressed with his last two books, Grandpa's great escape, and this one, The Midnight Gang.
The Midnight Gang was very slow to get started, and was trying to be funny with the Dr trying to fill out a ridiculous form, but it wasn't amusing to myself, or my 2 children I was reading aloud to. I felt this way with GGE as well. Things eventually improved halfway through the book, but I felt it could have been much shorter and snappier - is there really any need for it to be > 400 pages?!
I thought there was going to be a death in this story, given Walliams propensity for tackling difficult, dark subjects and I'm not sure if I'm relieved or disappointed there wasn't.
I will keep reading and buying his books, because we do enjoy reading them together, but I hope he has some more interesting stuff to write next time.
