Okay the plot, the gore and the “creature” in this were fantastic. I didn’t think the vine would scare me but I ended that book never wanting to be near a plant again. It was some solid horror and definitely King-esque.
However, holy shit this author has never met a real life woman. The female characters were so one-dimensional and everything was weirdly sexual. There was a lot of subtle and not so subtle misogyny intertwined (see what I did there) throughout the book. And the men in this were mostly disgusting or barely given any depth. -500/10 for character writing but 5/5 for plot/horror.

Completely horrifying, bleak and disgusting. First venture into horror literature so was a bit intense in body horror for my liking but would be great for someone who loves gore. The setting was so tangible and the ruins were written in a terrifyingly beautiful way.
The ending left me empty, knowing that everything was for nothing and that rescue was so close the entire time, with everyone giving up a second too early.
