Books like this are the stuff that heartache is made up of. A bittersweet story that leaves a gaping hole in your chest while at the same time so satisfying. Where to even begin with this story? First off I LOVE the style this story is written in. So many form of communications, through letters, emails, texts, and a book. Miss Josephine De Clare (1821 and 2021) took the cake.
This book is about Josie (AKA Josephine De Clare), she's grieving her father's death while emotionally estranged from her mother. She's taking a gap semester and is staying at a house her father bought, Cadwallader. It's in the country and quiet and needs quite a few updates. From there she finds letters in a drawer from over 200 years ago addressed to Josephine De Clare.
When I first heard about this book I thought actual time travel would be involved--I WISH-- but I still loved it. That’s on me not knowing what the book was about and honestly it made the whole reading experience so much better. The writing style surprised me but I think it fit the story so well! I love epistolatory style novels, Jane Austen would be proud!
I loved Josie in this story, I do wish we could have seen more of her day to day life at Cadwallader and her interactions with Oliver instead of her recounts in her emails to her friend. But at the same time I love it? If I had one word to describe this book its bittersweet. The whole time I was kind of doing what Josie did with the manuscript. I would read and have to put it down because I didn’t know if I wanted it to end! Ah--I have never wanted to cry over a book more and I don’t cry over many books, if any.
I need to find out WHAT HAPPENED TO 1821 JOSEPHINE? Where did she go, did she marry, did she think about Elias as he thought about her? DID SHE WRITE LETTERS TO HIM TOO? I need a sequel; I need to know more about what happens with Oliver and Josie. Please, Miss Caroline George?
I love love love this book and the wound needs to be filled with what happens next for Oliver and Josie. I fully believe that Josephine was a past life of Josie and that somehow Oliver might be Elias Roch?? *cries in fangirl* Oh how I didn’t want this to end!
Please excuse me as I sit despondent knowing that I will never have Elias Roch, Mr. Darcy, or an Oliver in my life. As I type this I make plans to buy a small estate and spend the rest of my days starring off into the distance looking for a man in a great coat to be coming towards me.
PS. I adored all of the Pride and Prejudice hat tips in this book!

Josie was such an amazing character. She did what every book lover does- fall for the main character! And it did something better for her in the end!

When Josie De Clare moves into the English manor house her father purchased before his death, she discovers a pile of 19th century letters — written to her!
Elias Roch, the former occupant of the house, seems to have met a mysterious woman named Josephine De Clare once, and subsequently fell in love with her. He was never able to find her again, and so his letters to her were never sent. But the more Josie reads, the more she feels like the Josephine Elias knew was in fact Josie herself. And it’s hard not to fall in love with him in return.
An epistolary romance that alternates between Elias’s letters, Josie’s emails and texts, and the novel Elias wrote fictionalizing his relationship with Josephine. Hardly the “new Pride and Prejudice” proclaimed on the cover, but a lovely story nonetheless.
Honestly I’m not emotionally ready to talk about this book.
I loved it.
“When the world seems dark, we must look for a bright spot, to be the bright spot. We choose our joys.”

I was interested in the premise of this book. I am giving it 3 stars. I liked the different ways the author told the story, narrative, letters, texts. emails and a "novel". However, there were 3 story lines and it was a little confusing. Maybe it was because I was listening to it and I may have missed key things at the beginning of the chapter, or when I started and stopped and didn't remember if I was listening to the letters or the novel. I liked the premise of the star-crossed lovers, but I felt it fell flat. I enjoyed the supporting characters and felt the author did a good job with them in the story. I feel that the story lacked a certain something--I wanted more excitement or a bigger plot twist, or something.
