Another great entry in the Valiant universe. Solid origin story for Peter Stanchek. One of the best villains in recent memory in Toyo Harada. Promising supporting characters in Livewire and Faith. Hyped to read more of this, but for now onto Bloodshot!

This one's my second in depth foray into the newer Valiant books (with my first being X-O Manowar) and I've gotta say this title felt, read, and flowed much better.

Peter Stanchek is a teenager who, when we first see him, is simply hearing everyone's thoughts as he slums it on the streets of Pittsburgh. Boy, is that only barely scratching the surface of this one, which was a very exciting read. Throw in super powers (in a not-overly-superheroey way), secret societies, messianic characters, and a boatload of action and you've got Harbinger.

This one was really hard to pull away from and, though I've not read much, the best of the new Valiant stuff I've seen.

I'd recommend it to anyone interested in giving Valiant a shot, fans of dynamic and exciting comic book art and story, and fans of the involved creators.

*-I read this book as digitally downloaded single issues of Harbinger #s 1-5

Just an average trade. The artwork was great at times but just pedestrian for the majority of the collection. The story really plodded along until the last chapter when things picked up, so I am looking forward to the next trade but it looks like it might be part of a crossover which irritates me to no end.

From Goodreads:
Super-powered teenager Peter Stanchek is on a dangerous path. Skipping across the country in a desperate attempt to stay one step ahead of the authorities, Peter is quickly realizing that he's a psionically-charged "harbinger" with the potential to reshape the course of human history. But Peter's plight has not gone unnoticed. Respected philanthropist and fellow harbinger, Toyo Harada, is about to offer Peter the chance at the things for which the boy has always longed - family, inner peace, self-control - and induct him into the sprawling, secret network of conspiracy and subversion known as the Harbinger Foundation. Now, Peter begins his long road towards a destiny that will shake the very foundations of the Valiant Universe. His first lesson? All power comes with a price!

A bit of a different spin on a familiar concept. Sort of like X-Men only the abilities people have are mind-based and don’t affect the physical body. There’s no Mystique, Nightcrawler, Cyclops or Beast in this universe. At least, not that I’ve seen yet. I like Peter. What a shitty hand he was dealt. And I have to tell you, I’m not liking this Toyo dude very much. What the fuck? I like the story and the artwork is fantastic, too. I’m looking forward to more of this series.

Valiant's spin on the "you're-not-just-special, you're-part-of-a-larger-world" story, and while just as well pulled off as the rest of the Valiant line, this one is less my kind of thing. It seems like it's the underlying thread of a lot of their universe, though, so time may tell. The power sets are pretty awesome, and the artwork in this is spot on (though I could have used more character differentiation at times). The main character is kind of deplorably broken, but a long road to redemption seems like the narrative, here.
