'The Promised Neverland, Vol. 1' by Kaiu Shirai with art by Posuka Demizu is a manga about a group of children living in what seems to be an idyllic setting.

Emma and her fellow orphans live in Grace Field House which is run by a woman they call Mom. They are well fed, and tested. They can play in the forest, but they are forbidden from going near the gate. One night, Emma and her friends go near the gate and find out the horrible truth about their existence. Now they have to find a way to escape.

I really liked the set up and everything up to the kids finding things out. After that, the pacing just kind of got stuck for me. The planning to escape was endless and they hadn't even left by the end. The art is quite good and I liked the style.

I received a review copy of this manga from VIZ Media and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.

this is a series i knew absolutely nothing about when i started it. because it has “neverland” in the title, i was definitely expecting some sort of peter pan retelling. that was not the case. while the place these children live in is certainly a neverland, it’s for a tragic reason rather than a magical one. while it is simply fiction, this series was difficult to read. children have always been dear to my heart, and having to see all of what these kids have to go through really messed with my emotions. but that is exactly why i am giving this series a 5 star review. this series kept you guessing and because of that you felt every emotion right along with the characters. fear, sorrow, helplessness, and most of all hope. the main character, emma, is a literal ray of hope within this series like a character i’ve never seen before. while many parts of this series was gruesome, it is still one of the most beautiful stories i’ve ever read with some of the best characters i’ve ever met. i highly recommend reading this manga!
