this one took me a little while to get into, and there’s a vague naivety that we share with the main character that makes the story confusing at times, but overall…wow.

there were so many little things mentioned in such subtle ways that culminated to something big and unexpected (which i was shocked i didn’t expect.) the writing is so good. the ending is so bleak. i sobbed.

really recommend this book. it’s heartwarming and surprising and so sad.

What a unique and thoughtful book this was.

I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this before, but I loved this weird little world I was introduced to. I wouldn’t *necessarily* say this is straight sci-fi, but there’s definitely some elements of it, as well as some dystopian, literary fiction, coming of age, and fantasy; I know that sounds like a weird mix, but it really worked here.

Klara is an Artificial Friend, and I loved how she interacted with the world and the people in it. She was so observant and mindful of the emotions of people, and I especially liked seeing the dynamic between her and her teenage “owner” Josie. The devotion she had towards her felt special, and I liked how they kind of grew up together.

There were some points where the fantastical elements weren’t totally explained, rather just brought up throughout the book, but there were usually enough context clues to figure it out.

Overall this was a thought-provoking and almost sweet/tender book, with characters that will stay with me.

Woof. This book is daaaaark. Overall
there is a happy(?) Ending
but this is definitely a dystopian near - future look of the world.

The delves deep into the emotions of humans, told from the perspective of an artificial intelligence, and lengths parents will go through to keep their child alive. It's also a coming of age story about young love. This book feels very topical due to the rise of AI and it replacing human jobs.

The first part took me awhile to get into the book, but once I better understood Klara and her POV, the book was captivating. The actual plot is pretty minimal, but the world building and emotional connections are incredible.

So clever and efficient. When the horror lies in the errors we are capable of doing as humans... Klara is a just a wonderful character overall. Really reminded me of Never Let me Go too.
