Difficult to rate this one because I read it whilst being in a weird place, over a much longer period than i usually would, so my view of it is confused and fractured
pros:
- it had plenty of excitement and gripping moments
- the inter-character dynamics reminded me of Six of Crows and there was humour too
- the worldbuilding, as in bk.1, is amazing and very detailed
- it's well written, with lots of vivid descriptions, but also tense action
- i liked Merrin and the other new characters
- there were plenty of plot points following up after bk.1
cons:
- i just didn't emotionally connect that much. Lei is meant to be the softer one, but she still kills and the one guard she kills early on, she hardly seems to care about. i found it hard to relate to her all that much, and she seemed pretty passive here, just doing what others tell her
- we didn't get to see much of the Paper girls from the palace
- it felt like it dragged somehow, but that might've been because of how i read it
- the deaths of Bo and Hiro felt somewhat disconnected? I still don't understand why Hiro had to die then, what did Wren's dao do exactly? I understand that their deaths were to highlight Wren's ruthlessness and the difficulty of their mission etc. but the means of their dying felt contrived. I know irl, people's deaths often have no meaning in war but this is a book so I felt like they came out of nowhere and i didn't feel much
- as much as I liked Merrin, Netta and the others, they didn't feel completely fully developed but a little flat.
overall, i didn't enjoy it as much as bk. 1 but i couldn't rly say why. it might just be my state of mind.
