I don't know if I could bring myself to ever read it again, but it was an epic journey.

The strength was in its character-driven plot as well as the writing itself. Sure, there were times when I wished that I could tear a handful of pages out and toss them away, but generally I was keen to press on.

The scariest thing about this book isn't the virus or Flagg but King's understanding of the human condition how easy it is for any of us to blindly follow someone. If I had ready this in high school I'm sure the first two would have been the most haunting parts of this amazing story.

I understand why this is considered one of King's best. I devoured this book! I adore post-apocalyptic stories, and this is definitely one of the most famous. There are definitely some weirder bits that stopped this from being a five-star read for me. I understand this was originally published in the 1970s, and I am looking through it with perhaps a too-modern perspective. But sometimes, King's descriptions of women and minorities really irk me. For the most part, though, I think this novel is very good. Although it's over 1,000 pages, and King is known for waffling on, it didn't feel like it needed to be shorter.
