This is a beautiful little story about a boy with depression, a boy and his father, a boy making friends, a boy reconciling with his culture, a boy learning to exist, a boy growing up, and more. This book touches on so many things, and it doesn’t always pay them off perfectly (or even fully go back to things it touches on to give it a resolution or an exploration), but it is still strong, beautiful, and made me cry as an adult working through my relationship with my father and perhaps becoming a father someday.
Highly recommend to any interested in these ideas or themes.

10/10 would ugly cry again

we might live different lives, this boy and I, but some feelings just are universal. it is pretty painful to be human sometimes.

If you asked me what was so magical and wonderful about this book, I don't think I could tell you. But what I can say is that you should absolutely read this, because it is wonderful and magical and emotional. I'm very glad to have the chance to discover and read Darius' story!

I ADORE Darius and just want to wrap him up in a hug. This was a fantastic book examining the relationship between families and friends and mental illness. I already want to read it again.

This book is really wonderful. It covers depression in a thoughtful, realistic way, and shows how you can still have a life with mental illness. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Persian culture and history, and Darius' narration was engaging. The author did an incredible job writing each of Darius' relationships with his family members and other characters. This is a comforting, easy-to-read, slice-of-life book.
