Yeah, the category "Screwball Fantasy" (which I stole from the back of one of the books) is an excellent description for this book and -- I certainly hope -- for the whole series. I'll be reading the rest of the books in this one within the next year unless something unexpected happens (like, for instance, being accidentally swept into a whole new world of magic and mystery -- you know, in the detective investigation sense - that has been lying quietly under the real world all my life without my ever realizing it. I figured out what my third name has to be, just in case this does happen.).
This is neither Harry Potter-like fantasy nor Harry Dresden-like fantasy, but a whole different branch on that tree -- possibly one grafted on -- but it gives the strangest fruit. In an entertaining way. And I think I really like Skulduggery himself. I definitely plan to travel with him through more adventures.

Adventurous and funny, strong female protagonist. I will definitely recommend this to kids who want to read something like Harry Potter but not Harry Potter. This story also has a girl discovering a world of magic just below the surface of the common world and a big bad villain. Unfortunately I got bored by this magical world (I'm feeling burned out in general on magical worlds) and its expected quest and battles.
I know this book is technically aimed at children but I thought it was hilarious. Skulduggery manages to portray so much emotion as a character but is actually just a skeleton. Also obviously I like anything supernatural and everyone has powers in this series, I even like the bad guys because they are so well written.
This was a cute book to listen to as a family on a road trip. The writing was clever and the characters were likable.
A decent book for 10 year olds. Zero subtlety whatsoever. Do real mortal enemies talk that much in order to look cool and/or explain their life choices while facing off each other? By the time any of them finished talking, at least 10 people could have been killed. I wish they could have been a tiny bit more realistic and GET TO BUSINESS instead of rambling on and on and on. This, I believe, belongs to the group of fantasies with terrible world building and commentation that it actually makes me feel bad for rating Neverwhere 3 stars.
I absolutely loved this book. The dialogue is great. I loved the exchanges between Skulduggery and Stephanie. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Great creepy fun!! The audio for this series is awesome. I wish they would release the whole series on audio.

Entertaining story and well told - the writing style is unique, but may need a little buffing here and there. Nevertheless I liked reading this very much.
