I liked a this a lot. I liked it A LOT a lot—I think even more than my 10yo did. (He also liked it.) Landy has a real talent for writing action scenes with cinematic style, and the sarcastic dynamic between the main characters was funny and creative. The fantasy elements didn’t take over, and it just felt…right. It was like a perfect first season of a TV series or movie franchise: sharp and focused and clearly intentioned, before the plot starts to wear thin and the writers run out of ideas and have to resort to Cousin Oliver or a Rimbaldi Device.

it’s crazy that stephanie is 12 in this. skullduggery is a crazy dude for letting her come along on such a crazy mission.
so many of those people died/nearly died or are now death adjacent.

many, many classic fantasy elements (unsuspecting heroine, dying older relative bequeathing important--world saving stuff, "real names" have power over you, good vs. evil, blah, blah, blah) but what sets this apart is a)the walking, talking skeleton hero character and b)the witty banter oh, and c)the delightful "taken" names that the characters choose for themselves. I liked those. The voice that the audiobook reader chose for Skullduggery was not at ALL what I would have imagined for the style of the humor of the book (the voice is extremely deep and gravelly, the wit is light and fast-paced) which is an odd thing to realize since I haven't read paper copies of the book and established a voice for the character in my head before I heard this voice. I kind of want to read another tale to see where the author goes with this. I mean, this is supposed to be the intro to the series and it already seemed pretty epic. Is he gonna continue to notch it up? Might be exhausting.

This was my first audiobook and I think I chose well. I played several dozen games of solitaire while listening to this book and had to pause a few times because I was laughing so hard. It's smart, funny, and completely different from everything else I've read. I'm sad I waited so long to read this.

Cute story, like Jim Butcher for kids. I could have done without all the action scenes though.

very entertaining book! it had great humor and characters.
