Delightful!  I enjoyed the characters and the world.  I really liked Stephanie as a heroine, she was smart and resourceful and sassy.  Her banter with Skullduggery was great.
I particularly enjoyed how she solved problems without having to be "suddenly superhumanly strong" or "suddenly discovering she has crazy huge magic". I'm sure the latter is coming, but I appreciate it not being used as a deus ex machina to get her out of difficult situations.  I also appreciated characters actually feeling loss and regret for their choices and actions, even if the situation justified the choice.

Twelve-year old Stephanie Edgley is willed her uncle's home, and his supernatural problems, upon his death. This includes the friendship of Skullduggery Pleasant, a wry, sarcastic sorcerer who became a walking, talking skeleton after a run-in with an evil sorcerer. After they meet, Stephanie and Skullduggery work together to stop the evil sorcerer. Stephanie's an average person, but with her adventures with Skullduggery, learns there's a wider world of magic around her, and wants in. She proves herself repeatedly with her quick thinking, and gains Skullduggery's respect and mentorship by the end of the book.
If the rest of the series is as fun and fast-paced as this first book, I'm going to have to continue reading. I liked Stephanie, and her relationship with Skullduggery, and I particularly liked how capable and smart she showed herself to be in many odd and often quite dangerous situations. I liked her chosen name, too: Valkyrie Cain.

meh. I wanted to really love this book, but it was not for me. Fun and British, yay! An unlikeable little girl sidekick, boo!
Twas entertaining, but I felt like I had to slog through to the end.
Would give to anyone.
