nick cutter knows how to write the most nauseating, horrifying concepts you've ever seen in your goddamn life and then has the audacity to involve five 14yo boys. and i eat it up every time

Although I thought Cutters writing was good, Shelly ruined this book for me.
The addition of a pointless "crazed psychopath" killer did nothing but make me wish the book didn't have him in it. He was a boring, uninspired character who provided no more tension than the initial premise, and only served to detract from it. He wasn't believable, and it nearly made me stop reading the book. The more I think about it the more annoyed I am by this character, to the point that his pointlessness ruined an otherwise solidly good book.

Normally, I'd be keeping (and re-reading) any book I rate this highly, however, Nick Cutter's The Troop is an exception; it's too gruesome and descriptive when it comes to wanton animal cruelty. It's incredibly well written and engaging and it definitely does body horror well (something I find hard to find in written works), but I just don't care to re-read accounts of squishy, gross torture of animals and the whiny, teenage narratives of the main characters.

If you like body horror, you'll probably find this is a good/fast read. It's also worth noting that while the characters aren't necessarily likeable, they are not two dimensional and do seem to be complex in the way I would say most pre-teens/teenagers tend to be, which made it more believable.

Man, this book is fucking gross. So disturbing sometimes. I grimaced through whole scenes, several times. However, I really enjoyed the writing and I burned through it in two sittings. I always advocate for more diverse characters and strong female characters, but given that this is about Boy Scouts and inspired by Lord of the Flies, the homogeneity isn't surprising. I give it a pass. Really taut storytelling, a horrifying threat, some heartbreaking scenes, and all the skin-crawling disgust you could ask for.

Personally, not for me. I found the horror to be more sad than scary, and I felt pretty frustrated by the end of it. Give it a try, it's definitely last paced, but I dunno I don't think I'll be picking up another from this author anytime soon .
