I didn't have any expectations. I wanted a little read and that's what I found.
It starts pretty slow and there isn't a lot of action except by the end. There are a few disturbing scenes, especially toward the end.
I felt one big emotion throughout the book and it was anger.
It angered me how she was always victimized, never believed, how her husband and kids treated her
. Even though there isn't a lot of action, it is still a fluid read. I wish it had been more energetic: the detective work wasn't really detective work. It was more of a "I know that's all" which was kinda "ok". Though, I liked how vampires were pictures.
Always alive/truly immortal, no fangs, can go into the sun... Not the usual vampire
and I also liked how friendship was portrayed.
Even though most of it felt superficial
it was easy for them to turn their backs on others the minute they disagreed on something
, you can see how the women shared a deeper connection between themselves even if, by appearance, they didn't share anything in common.

I really enjoyed the opening of this book. The introduction of all the characters & the setting was really enjoyable for me. Then, when the action hit, I hit a slump & struggled to want to pick the book back up. I’m not sure why it was struggling to hold my attention, but it did. But after I pushed through the last 35% was definitely enjoyable (if not also quite disturbing)
Definitely a unique take on a vampire story.

I really enjoyed this book and found it to have many more layers than I originally expected. It started off campy and hilarious, but turned more dark and serious. There is definitely both paranormal and more domestic-style horror elements and it felt like I read two different books between the first half and the second. I really appreciated the messaging about how no one listens to POC (specifically black people in this book), women, or children. And no one cares what happens to the black people in this book, many characters turn a blind eye and just say “oh well, that’s too bad” without giving it more thought. I feel like this book could have been a 5 star if it had been written by a black person and seen from Mrs. Greenie’s perspective. She was my favorite character!! I felt like the author did a pretty good job portraying Patricia in this book, but a lot of the other characters were more superficial. This book inspired a lot of unsettled feelings, both related to the paranormal and the relationships between the characters. It felt a little long and drawn out though, especially with Patricia getting back into the James Harris issue. I wish there had been more actual book club time throughout the book and that the friends could have been better friends to each other.

Overall it was kind of icky 😬 during the first half of this book I was thinking it would be a five star read, however the second half was so horrific that I don’t even want to give it three.

Great character development! I love how Grady Hendrix writes his female MCs. Fun premise, delightful friends in the book club, awful husbands, descriptive gore and body horror, novel twists on old vampire lore, psychic grannies, racial awareness... What more do you want?

Too dark and random. Gruesome descriptions. Violence that didn't seem to go with the plot. SA.

Didn’t love the audio. But the story was captivating! Even during the gross parts, I still wanted to listen more. Recommend if you want a good story about vampires, and taking place over a few years. It was a long audiobook, but I did enjoy getting to know Patricia and her character in depth.
