This book surprised me! I liked the style more than I expected and felt so viscerally upset with how the main character was treated by her husband and the other men. I really love that the women are such complex characters who aren’t painted as good or bad people, but people who do good or bad things. Grace in particular is shown to be incredibly caring and selfless towards Patricia at some moments while still making decisions that protect her own interests, a luxury of duality not often afforded to secondary female characters.

Grady Hendrix always makes you think with his writing. Sometimes that thought is " I wouldn't have made that narrative decision" and sometimes that thought is "this is a super creative take on the vampire story".
Hendrix is fantastic at pulling you into his main character's head and forcing you to see why they are reacting to their situation the way they are. This is a horror book and contains some potentially upsetting stuff. I'd definitely recommend checking the trigger warnings before starting if you're worried about that.

Wow!! I loved this book, I don’t normally read gory books but this one was great! I love that it showed a normal group of women fighting for themselves and their families. Every single man in this book is completely infuriating, there were several times I was yelling for the women to answer the men with more sass than a lady like them would dare to. When the police and men think you’re crazy and won’t help, you just have to get your girls to have your back.

WTF, this book was pure anxiety. Toxic masculinity, racism, gaslighting, references to the ADHD-"craze" of the 90s, with hardly any actual vampire action. I think there was an effort to be like Dracula?

This book is extremely graphic. It seems like the author made it into a horror book by including horrific scenes of violence. I was disappointed that such an otherwise interesting story included such human debasement in the name of making a story "scary." I finished the book but it left me feeling uneasy and contemplating the role of violence in the horror genre.
