As a fan of the games and show, this was super fun and easy to read. Bit of a non ending, which is fine as I fully intern to read the next few as well!

Though I didn't love this as much as the prequels, Blood of Elves was a great start to the series. We gained a lot of insight into Ciri's character and her importance in this world. I could have done without the multitude of political meetings and schemes, but they were necessary to set up the story. I can't wait to see where everything goes. Highly recommended!

“You should know, Ciri,” said Yarpen, “that my grandmother knew her medicine like nobody’s business. Unfortunately, she believed that the source of most disease is idleness, and idleness is best cured through the application of a stick. As far as my siblings and I were concerned, she chiefly used this cure preventively. She beat us for anything and for nothing. She was a rare old hag. And once when, out of the blue, she gave me a chunk of bread with dripping and sugar, it was such a surprise that I dropped it in astonishment, dripping down. So my gran gave me a thrashing, the nasty old bitch. And then she gave me another chunk of bread, only without the sugar.”

Geralt grunted something about women and their impulsive natures - which the dwarf considered far too mild a description for maliciousness, obstinacy and vindictiveness.

“That water’s a stupid idea,” stated Regan Dahlberg, spitting out a bone. “Washing can only harm you when you’re sick. When you’re healthy, too, come to that. You remember old Schrader? His wife once told him to wash, and Schrader went and died soon afterwards.”
“Because a rabid dog bit him.”
“If he hadn’t washed, the dog wouldn’t have bitten him.”

Update at 2024

<...> He saw there the hard pride of a warrior and impudence. He did not see any of the things that should've been visible in the face of one who'd have spent past two years incarcerated in a place from which, as everything have indicated, you would only leave for the scaffold. A faint smile touched the martial's lips - he knew that the disdain for death and crazy courage of youngsters stemmed from the lack of imagination. He knew that perfectly well. He had once been such a youngster himself.

I read these books in chronological rather than release date order, and I must say that the writing style of the prequels is far superior to book 1.
I appreciate Sapkowski showing us scenes via dialogue rather than description, but at times it is a bit too much dialogue-dependent and I would appreciate some description.
On the flip side, I felt the fight movements were a bit overused in this book — how many times do I need to hear about pirouettes? The dialogue tags are also a bit much at the beginning.
Not as much of the cheeky humor in this book as was present in the prequels, but a solid book.
I can’t imagine reading this one first, though. I will probably continue the series just to see if the writing develops into what I enjoyed from the prequels.

I’m so impressed with this series so far. I love the writing, the characters, the worldbuilding. My favorite parts were when there were training scenes/montages made up of just dialogue—they were so well done and interesting and surprisingly funny.

I can’t believe this one is the lowest rated—I’m so excited to keep going.

Not much happened really, other than a few battles and several conversations. The lore building is minuscule compared to Witcher III
