I don’t know. I love this world so much but the book is so hard to read because it’s just written so…poorly? It seems so unorganized and the characters so flat? I know what they become but reading them like this is really not super enjoyable.

Very enjoyable throughout, the pacing is different and there is somewhat less fascination with the world of the book series here than there is in the short stories of The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, concentrating mostly on Ciri's process of growing up and our previously known character's role in it. Nonetheless, it appealed to me more, while some of the short stories were perhaps better than this whole book, I can't emphasise enough how necessary some character exploration and development were. Geralt is neutral and sleeps with every woman he meets and Yennifer is cruel, moody but somehow also incredibly into Geralt. This volume, mostly through Ciri (who is a lot more of an actual character and also a lot more likeable in this than she is in the TV show) shows both Geralt and Yennifer from new angles, how they interact with the few people they care about and not merely on a sexual level. I was really worried about the progression of the books, as the short stories, despite some of them being outstanding pieces of storytelling, really lacked any sense of character. This book was clearly a lot less interested in exploring the kind of side quests that let the reader immerse in the world of the witcher previously, but instead focuses on a linear narrative, politics, and more classical fantasy topics. Very enjoyable indeed. Looking forward to reading the next one already.

I liked this one a lot. It was nice to have a continuous story that featured Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer, mainly. I liked Yennefer more in this book than any of her sightings in the first two; it was nice to see a different side of her. Ciri is much more playful and joyful in the books than in the show and I really enjoy her character.
