I really didn’t like this book. the writing was not my favorite, the characters felt illegitimate, and the ending/reveal was cheap and obvious in my opinion. after reading the back i was so incredibly excited to read and love this but it just felt like a first draft :(

I found this book on a best of the year list, so my hopes were pretty high. I did like it, but it was underwhelming for me. I found it hard to get into, as it essentially cold opens with a kidnapping. I struggled to car for the 2 people I had just met who were now being victimized by The Chain.

As it went on, I got more and more invested. I liked the story, the writing, and the flow of part 1. It was pretty predictable, and I wanted something more shocking to happen, to prove the fear of The Chain was worth all this emotional investment I put into the book. The ending of part 1 was pleasant, it was fine. I would have been ok with ending the entire book there.

But then we have Part 2. The start of part 2 is extremely jarring, the mood is different, it's just not as good. I figured out the "who-dun-it" pretty quick here, and once again the ending wasn't shocking. For this book to have been a best thriller of the year is really surprising, as I think any die hard reader of thrillers would have figured it out pretty quickly.

I did like it, and I read it very quickly. It was easy to follow, and I didn't find myself skimming the pages. It was a fun read.
