I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either. I thought Lily was a well-drawn character, as was Nellie, but most of the other characters were more like caricatures. I didn’t like a 40-something Sam Trench yearning over a vulnerable 17-year old girl, and I didn’t understand the significance of Lily cutting Nurse Maud’s hair. Ultimately, the story meandered along, telling Lily’s story, and it just petered out at the end.
