My favorite in The Hungry City Chronicles so far. Reeve has a way of building a thriving, moving world despite the barren land and harsh conditions. The characters of his world are so varied and distinguished and as developed as George RR Martin's Game of Thrones characters without dragging the reader on and on. And the main characters are so refreshing for a young adult novel with Hester being extremely complex. A constant page-turner.
This was very well written just like the previous instalments in the Mortal Engines Quartet.

A lot of this book dealt with the feelings Hester has for her daughter (feelings of confusion, resentment, guilt, and jealousy) and her changing feelings for Tom.
I love Hester and Tom together so that coloured my enjoyment a little (and lost some stars) as I tend to emphasise with Hester and it was hard to read about her resenting her own child. The world-building in this series is always a highlight and overall it was still a very enjoyable story that helped me to understand the character\actions of Hester better.
These books should definitely be read in order or you will have no clue what is going on, especially with the time jump at the start of this one.

Fingers crossed that A Darkling Plan brings the Quartet to a satisfying conclusion.
