I cannot imagine [b:1984|5470|1984|George Orwell|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1348990566s/5470.jpg|153313] would have been this good if [b:We|76171|We|Yevgeny Zamyatin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1421883730s/76171.jpg|2144026] never existed. Or if it could have existed at all. But I cannot see [b:We|76171|We|Yevgeny Zamyatin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1421883730s/76171.jpg|2144026] for anything more than this: the original inspiration that opened the way to the real masterpiece 25 years later.

Several paragraphs - when not complete chapters - are fuzzy, and things are often moving from an idea to another one, simply too fast for it to really make any sense.
The story is brilliant but the writing style seems just unsatisfying.

I definitely would not recommend reading [b:We|76171|We|Yevgeny Zamyatin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1421883730s/76171.jpg|2144026] if you never read [b:1984|5470|1984|George Orwell|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1348990566s/5470.jpg|153313] before, and would want to find out where the original inspiration came from.

"Stash them? But where? Everything's made of glass. Burn them? But they could see from the hall and from the rooms next door. Besides, I can't, I no longer have the strength to destroy this painful piece of myself, which might turn out to be the piece I value most."

Okay, this one was definitely a legacy read, as I was interested to read the book which inspired 1984 and Brave New World and... it was mostly *fine*.

I think that, often, the art that innovates the thing is very much the blueprint without being the best version of that thing, and I definitely think that was the case here. I found all the characters really unlikable, and not in interesting ways. I just didn't really care about them. The use of the word "soul" was kind of corny by today's standards too, although I do understand what they were getting at.

Also, lots of random misogyny and racism throughout, which wasn't great.

Finally I have managed to complete one of my reading challenges. 25 books done with a lot of 2018 left to go.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read 1984, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451 or Brave New World but I think We tops the dystopian list for me. We was written earlier than these other examples but it uses language and narration that felt far more creative and engaging to me.

The problems of humanity that it raises are not as hard-hitting or relevant to modern society, but the cover of the book is animated so it is the clear winner.
