I love Shirley Jackson's novels, but for me these short stories were a bit of a mixed bag. Some were great, but some felt (to me) a little flat.
I did enjoy, though, how much of the tension was built by the anxiety of needing to act "normal" in Small Town America...

Shirley Jackson was the queen of all introverts, is what I have learned from reading this.
The tales in this book, with the exception of The Lottery, are not really horror. They are tales of social interactions gone sour in strange and alarming ways that never veer into violence but instead keep coming back to the central theme that humans are full of unfathomable contradictions and ugly biases, and that having to deal with them is the real horror.

The Lottery was great but I really didn't care for the majority of the "Other Stories," making it a chore to read.
