Great book. Would love to learn more. Have you thought about doing this with all sorts of diseases and disabilities?

Burcaw has lived his life with spinal muscular atrophy, a rare disease which halts his muscle growth and ensures he must use a wheelchair. Yet he remains optimistic, working on being a dis/ability activist and sharing the knowledge about his disease and why it doesn’t make him so different after all. Filled with Carr’s staged photography and speech bubbles, this book offers a simultaneously honest and funny look at Burcaw’s everyday life. Though such a biographical and informational book may not be good for reading out loud to a group, it may succeed in groups discussing differences, and will definitely succeed for personal reading. Great for grades 2-4.

I was lucky enough to meet Shane Burcaw at ALA 2018 in NOLA. He is such an amazing, positive person and I love that he shares his story with everyone. This is a great book for anyone to red. Monarch 2020 nominee.

Shane makes great use of humorous narrative and images to open a dialogue with kids about living with spinal muscular atrophy. He points out ways he’s just like anyone else, and explains some of the things he does to adapt to his body’s needs. I thought this was a really well done book. Shane knows his audience well!

this book is really fun and accessible and approaches ableism with humor

that said it would be nice to have more books that are for disabled kids rather than to teach abled kids stuff.

Great idea for a book. My only wish-- that it had included even more information. I realize that this is for younger kids, but wanted to know even more. For instance, how old was Shane when this book was published? I ended up doing some research, and came across his excellent blog. I would recommend that anyone using Shane's books also share his blog and other resources. Students might even want to do something in connection with his foundation.
